From the TIBCO Spotfire Menu you can see an Introduction to Spotfire

Go to, Select County and Equivalent (Current) and then Click on Download. Create a new directory folder to save and then unzip this compressed file. You will get file individual files, one of which is the tl_2009_us_county.shp file (119 MB) that is needed in Spotfire.

Next download the Spotfire File (MappingTutorial-Spotfire.dxp) to a new directory you create on your hard-drive.

From the Main Menu: Click File, Open, and Select MappingTutorial-Spotfire.dxp, to open this Spotfire file in the new directory you created on your hard-drive. Note: You can also explore Help on any of these screens. You will be prompted to to supply the Missing File, which is the tl_2009_us_county.shp file in the new directory where you downloaded and unzipped it.

Now you are ready to explore and use the Spotfire file which has a Cover Page (table of contents with links) and three tabs as follows:

Appendix II. Metropolitan and Micropolitan Statistical Areas: Concepts, Components, and Population 879-898

TigerLINE US County

Appendix II Mapped

The first tab was created by opening the FIX Metro Micro Estimates 2007_book.xls spreadsheet and selecting the Micro Areas data table (see screen capture) and doing Copy (Ctl-C) and then going to the Spotfire Menu and doing File, Add Data Table and selecting Clipboard and then Okay which imports this into Spotfire. A Text box was added at the top where the data source was added (provenance and metadata). The result is the first tab.

The second tab was created following essentially the same steps, but selecting File instead of Clipboard and browsing to the Directory where the tl_2009_us_county.shp file is. A Text box was added at the top where the Web Site URL for the data source was added (provenance and metadata).

The third tab was created by putting the two spatial databases together (mashups) as follows: From the Spotfire Menu, Select Insert New Visualization, Map Chart. Then right-mouse click within the Map Chart box and select Properties and then Data. Then select Manage Relations and then New Relation and make the boxes conform to the selections in the screen capture slides (slide 10). In essence, the Manage Relations maps the columns in each databases that are related to one another. Then the Table boxes for each of the two databases were also added so one could see the relationships between them (e.g. see Vermilion Parrish, County Code 21113 in Table B and then sort the TigerLINE 2009 US County Table using the Column CTYIDFP to more easily find Vermilion Parrish, County Code 21113).

You can export your application to PowerPoint and the Web by doing File Export and selecting the option you want and make your application run faster by doing File, Save as, File, and by selecting Override these setting and embed all data. The last option will make your Spotfire much larger since it embeds the tl_2009_us_county.shp file (119 MB).

See selected screen capture slides attached.

Note: You can do additional statistical analyses and visualizations with this Spotfire application by selecting from the Main Menu, Insert, New Page, and on the new page, selecting a graph icon in the Main Menu (e.g. Scatter Plot, Summary Table, etc.) and adjusting the axes to what you want to show. You can choose to save you exploratory data analysis or not when you exit Spotfire. Spotfire will import your S+, SAS, etc. files from previous analyses and other applications. Have fun!
