    Meetings

    June 28, 2011

    Just a reminder that our Tea and Talk is tomorrow! Details are below.

    You're cordially invited to the Taxonomy Tuesday Group's first "Tea and Talk," which will be held on Tuesday, June 28th. We will be meeting at 6pm on the downstairs level of the Teaism in Penn Quarter (location is below). The discussion will be casual and open to all, so feel free to bring any burning questions or topics you'd like to discuss. Some of our members had previously mentioned that our happy hours were far too loud to have an engaging discussion with other taxonomists; we hope that this new setting will address those concerns. If you have any questions, just ask. Nikkia, Amanda, and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow evening - Kathleen Caggiano

    More presentation information: Unifying Health Information Services at SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) SAMHSA launched a redesigned and integrated Web site that provides multiple ways to exchange information with and between customers. The SAMHSA store provides a unified clearinghouse to find and order publications for customers who may be consumers, service providers or policymakers. The same information management taxonomy is used to organize and browse the store, as well as the contact center knowledge base, content management system and data warehouse for analyzing all the data produced by the SHIN operations. The SAMHSA taxonomy thus is a key component that is facilitating the information integration. This session will 1) provide an overview of the overall SAMHSA project, and then 2) describe the taxonomy design, use and maintenance processes. A  short YouTube video about the project will be shown as well as a live demonstration of the publications store website.

    CANCELLED - TO BE RE-SCHEDULED

    October 12, 2010

    You are cordially invited to a presentation by Gail Rayburn on Tuesday, October 12th, at noon in the Department of Transportation (see directions below).  If you would like to attend the presentation, please RSVP no later than October 5th to Amanda.Wilson@dot.gov with your name and employer.

    Presentation:  Gail Rayburn is the Taxonomist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL). She was hired to develop an Enterprise Thesaurus for APL. However, due to the diversity and wide range of subject domains at APL, subject matter expert review of the Thesaurus terms became mandatory.   In order to minimize the impact on APL staff, it was necessary that the method of review be efficient, with minimal impact on the reviewer’s time.   After an extensive search revealed no COTS products that facilitated subject matter expert review, it was decided that APL needed to create a review application. Therefore, the “Subject Matter Expert Thesaurus Review” application was created. Slides.

    *Photo ID is required to enter the DOT building.  All visitors must check in at DOT’s West Building lobby.  After entering the building, staff will escort you to Conference Room 5.

    Title: Developing An Enterprise Business Vocabulary
    Presenters: Shewan Workneh & Xiaoli Huang, Enterprise Information Architects, International Monetary Fund Slides
    When: Tuesday, December 15, 2009, from 12-2 p.m.
    Description: Enterprise business vocabularies (EBV) represent the system-of-record for the Fund as endorsed by the Enterprise Architecture (EA) Board:
    - Establishes a common semantic standard;
    - Maintains a central point of control over the business semantics;
    - Any changes should be made using the SchemaLogic tools within the relevant enterprise vocabularies, then pushed out to consuming production systems.
    Thus far we have modeled and developed four vocabularies: Master Countries and Entities Vocabulary, Master Regions and Groups Vocabulary, Historical Country Names Vocabulary, and Economic Concepts Vocabulary. Recently we started working on the Master Topics Vocabulary, which poses interesting challenges. In the presentation, we will talk about the strategy and approach we have taken in developing the EBV, the tool we use (SchemaLogic), the issues we have identified along the way, and the lessons we have learned. We would like to use the presentation as a prelude to engage discussions on developing centralized semantic repositories on an enterprise level.

    Presentor: Larry Lempert, Director, Product Research and Planning, BNA Inc. Slides and Facet Site List.

    Description: Facets can add power to a Web site taxonomy because they reflect the many ways—beyond subject matter categories—that users might think about content they’re trying to find. But building facets into site navigation is hard because the complex associations underlying faceted classification have to be presented without overwhelming the user. This presentation will look at approaches to solving the interface design challenges of using facets and will try to identify some best practices evident on the Web. (And as two facets of lunch, cookies and beverages will be provided.)

The standards for thesauri, taxonomies, ontologies, semantic web and topic maps are converging. Where do they differ and where are they the same? This one hour talk will cover the ISO ANSI/NISO and W3C terminology and controlled vocabulary standards, as well as the differences in the new standards compared to the previous editions. Finally it will talk about the crosswalks and registries underway between these development communities."

    Some Notes:

    • Concerned about mis-information at recent Taxonomy Bootcamp: Do not need a librarian
    • BSI (BS 8723) the next revised ISO (British Standards Institute)
    • Opinion: Think will have two standards - one for the back of the book and the other for online searching
    • There is a standard for defining a taxonomy - see ISO Web site - and Wikipedia
    • A taxonomy is a set of preferred terms, all connected by a hierarchy or polyhierarchy frequently used in web navigation systems:
      • Chemistry
        • Organic chemistry
          • Polymer chemistry
            • Nylon
    • Originally the term taxonomy referred to the science of classifying living organisms (now known as alpha taxonomy); however, the term is now applied in a wider, more general sense and now may refer to a classification of things, as well as to the principles underlying such a classification.
    • Which community to serve?: Librarians, E-Government, etc.
    • Called Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS)
    • The Taxonomy Guide
    • Thesaurus Construction: A Practical Guide by Aitchison, Jean, Gilchrist, Alan and Bawden, David 4th ed. London: Aslib IMI, 2000
