Return to Campus to Teach and Learn Spreadsheets-to-Dashboards and Data Science Innovation

I had the recent pleasure of returning to a college campus (George Mason University) to teach college freshman in engineering and computer science how to make their Excel spreadsheets into nice dashboards on the Web. I have never presented to a large audience with  5 projections screens in the room (see George Mason University University Hall, Room 1201 high tech facilities).

The adjunct professor who invited me to guest lecture gave me the following challenge: If you can relate Big Data to social media, the students will find it very interesting, i.e. social media analytics. Then, you can discuss related concepts including natural language processing, graph computing, virtualization, cloud, text annotators, etc. Perhaps mention some open source Big Data platforms. Also describe the roles, responsibilities, and skills of a data scientist. They are mostly Freshman, so keep that in mind.

I wondered how I could cover all of that in just two two-hour lectures, but I decide to try. My agenda started with Who Am I and What Do I Do? I already knew Who Are You and What Do You Expect/Want From This? from the above.

I thought they would certainly be interested in the upcoming elections and the most recent environmental indicator data from the US Environmental Protection Agency where I worked for many years. They were and even decide to use my Excel spreadsheets and Spotfire files to create some nice dashboards on the Web for extra credit in their class.

I gave them the following slide presentations and Web links to get started:

More importantly, I stressed the importance of the following:

  • Start by asking questions - If you do not ask questions, you will not really benefit form the college experience
  • Then look for the evidence (data) to answer those questions
  • Also begin with the end in mind
  • Use my 5-step method (recipe)
  • Think outside the box and find others who do so also - innovation begins at the intersection of different disciplines
  • Create a Linkedin Profile, preserve your work, and learn information design
  • Learn about the new Data Science Department at GMU and its chief data scientist Professor Kirk Borne
  • Participate in the recent survey (BI Congress 3: Driving Innovation through Big Data Analytics) and Linkedin Discussions

I started my lecture with the question: How many would like to get a good job when the get out of college? Almost everyone raised their hand. I told them they could do that if they became a data scientist in whatever discipline they majored in and to Google 'data science' and 'data scientist' and see what a hot topic is has become. I told them they were fortunate to be on a college campus that recognized that and had recently reorganized several departments into a new department to teach data science.

I told them I also recommend government employees and retired people return to campus to learn data science to meet the tremendous demand for trained people in that field. Our ACT-IAC Big Data Committee is working on a report to Congress early next year that will recommend that as well as a series of government-industry-academic pilot projects for real-time analytics for Small Data, Big Data, and Huge Data! Stay tuned for more stories on this exciting development.

Introduction to Spotfire Learning Network (SLN)

Source: http://spottrain.tibco.com/sln/course/view.php?id=39

Introduction

This free quickstart guide will help you get the most out of Spotfire Learning Network, which is a powerful training delivery system based on Moodle. Each topic covers a different part of the user interface, and gives you tips on how to get the best value out of your Spotfire training.

The first thing to notice is that every course has a discussion forum at the top. Here, it is called the Water Cooler, as it is available to all students from all courses. It is usually called Class Questions. Make use of this: it is monitored by our global team of professional instructors regularly, but you can also expect answers from your fellow students. As most questions have more than one answer, posting them here will allow you to hear different points of view.

What is Blended Learning?

Blended learning has become something of a buzzword in recent years. For all the hype, it is notoriously difficult to pin down and define, and therefore tricky to assess its merits in any objective way. For these reasons, a seminal paper published by NETg (now Skillsoft) in 2002 is still relevant today and is often cited. It compares the results of traditional e-learning against a blended model in a repeatable experiment and therefore bears scrutiny. It found that a group of learners who received blended learning performed with 30% more accuracy and 41% faster than those who took only a traditional e-learning program.

It is the fact that this experiment is clearly defined and therefore repeatable which contributes to its popularity, and also because it defines the hallmarks of a strong blended learning model. There was no industry-wide blended learning ‘standard’ model at the time of the study, and that holds true today. This is a symptom of the differing needs of each learner and the many tools and systems available. However there is broad agreement that any training model should involve real-world problems, it should build on existing knowledge in a smooth and gradual fashion, and new skills should be demonstrated clearly and simply to the learner.

TIBCO Spotfire Education’s ‘virtual’ training sessions are a live example of this blended learning approach. Our model utilises all five of the key characteristics for success identified by this report. They are:-

(1) use of scenario-based exercises;
(2) integration of objectives with real-world scenarios;
(3) early use of the actual software being trained for;
(4) access to live mentors and
(5) assessments which mimic real-world tasks.

This is an ideal way to teach people across large distances without incurring travel and hotel costs, plus it allows you to spread a single course over a period of several days. Even better, students still receive a two-hour live seminar with one of our professional instructors. It really is the best of all worlds, and this research shows why. In future blog articles, we hope to be able to consdier the merits of traditional classroom training too, which is strongly recommended for more advanced topics or for those who prefer to learn away from their day-to-day office environment.

Don't just take our word for it! Click the image below to watch a movie created by FranklinCovey which further explains the pros and cons of this learning style...

The Sidebars

Take a look at the sidebars. These include useful tools: the ability to search all forums for specific text, news updates and event announcements related to the course. These gray panels in the sidebars are called Blocks.

You can also access your User Profile from the Administration block. Check it now and make sure it is up to date; you can add a photo or other image if you wish.

Bottom-left there is a block to access other Courses. You will find this useful if you have signed up for more than one course.

Training Format

Spotfire training uses the latest ideas from learning theory, and also some very powerful software tools such as Moodle which you are learning about, but also Articulate, SnagIt, Camtasia, MindManager, Jing and so on. Most of the time, you don't need to be aware of these authoring tools - we aim to create a seamless course for all students - but knowing which tools we have will help you to understand our training format.

Bootcamp or Blended?

We use the SLN / Moodle system for all our online training. Bootcamp is very much like the style of training used by colleges and universities, and is unlike a lot of other corporate training: it takes around 8 weeks to complete the content and then you have another 2 weeks with the materials and with an instructor's support, so you have all the materials for over two months. Then, there are several webinars with an instructor to ask questions and reinforce key topics. Blended is the same, but it tends to focus on a single course so you only get one webinar and 60 days to see the materials.

Upgrades

If you would like to upgrade your Blended training to a full Bootcamp, please emailspotfireregistrar@tibco.com for details.

Movies

Movies are usually based on screen captures using Camtasia. These are the nearest thing we can get to walkthroughs or demos which you would see if you came to the classroom, and are a very powerful learning style. Make sure you view all the movies relating to your course.

Presentations

Presentations are slideshows with a presenter's voice, just like you would get in class. They are better though: you can pause, rewind, repeat as often as you need to. This is particularly powerful for people whose first language is not English.You can also jump to any topic at any time. Make sure you maximize the web browser window so you get the clearest view of the presentation.

Exercises

Exercises are the only way you can practice what you learn outside of your normal work environment. We use Spotfire itself to create our exercises, so you do need this installed to take part. The great thing is you get to download and keep all the exercises forever - there are no time restrictions. Most of the files are the same ones we use in class, but there are bonus materials in this SLN training which are not available anywhere else!

Show only topic 6

Skills Tests

Skills Tests are another way to check what you know. They are informal, and results are not shared with your managers or colleagues. The results are used internally at TIBCO to help us improve our learning materials for the next version. We typically revise all materials twice a year - another reason to come back to us - there is always something new to learn, even within the same course!

The example below was taken from our Spotfire Essentials training. These skills tests are very short (this one has 10 questions) and should take a few minutes. If you don't know some answers, it could be worthwhile going back to the materials one more time.
