Story

Data Science for the Sacred Fire of Liberty Event

In the course of my research on natural medicines, I became involved in an amazing event, the Sacred Fire of Liberty, which honored a number of experts in this and related fields. Initially I was asked to provide volunteer help for the event's logistics, but then I was asked to help with registration and awards which required that I build spreadsheets to keep track of about 300 invited attendees and 150 awards in 11 categories.

I especially became very interested in the words accompanying the awards in the form of the award recipient bios, the press releases, and acceptance speeches. The bios where in the Event Program (PDF) and Awards Program (PDF), the awards were summarized in Sacred Fire of Liberty Gala Awards (PDF) Press Releases, and in the Video Replays (YouTube) and Acceptance Speeches (YouTube).

So I asked myself: How do you keep track of all of this and make it a searchable database? The data science answer, of course, is to make it a knowledge base with a semantically searchable index in a spreadsheet and Spotfire as one can see in my previous work.

All of the content was given structure in MindTouch (a state-of-the-art Wiki), an Excel spreadsheet, and Spotfire (Interactive Data Visualization, Analytics, and Business Intelligence Cloud Tool from TIBCO).

These are captured in a series of screen captures below.

An example of an interesting result is to select a person, e.g. Dr. Charles B. Simone and see how many times he is in the knowledge base and for what reasons using Google Chrome Find and Spotfire Filters. The answers are 19 and 5, respectively, and the results are shown below.

SacredFireGala2014-GoogleChromeDr.CharlesB.Simone.png

SacredFireGala2014-SpotfireDr.CharlesB.Simone.png

Dr. Charles B. Simone received 4 awards, was listed in the Awards Program and Honored Jonathan W. Emord with an email to all the participants! On a personal note, he asked me to help distribute his book at the event which we did. He also sent a very interesting email recently about Ebola! See Research Notes.

Some of the lessons learned are as follows:

  • Design the knowledge base so it accommodates sections of text with  a number of entities like names and award types.
  • Insure consistency in names so all the instances of a persons name can be found.
  • Allow for dynamic updating as items like Acceptance Speeches are still being added to YouTube.
  • Allow for more content to be added as my research into the work of individuals continues

On a personal note, this was a very rewarding experience for the author to work with Jonathan Emord, a man of great vision and character, and so many other wonderful people that participated in producing this great event in honor of George Washington and many great medical doctors and scientists. I love being able to dress up in colonial costume and play my new field drum like I did many years ago with my young children when we played in a fife and drum corps, The Potomac Ancients, whose instructors were members of the famous Old Guard Fife and Drum Corp.

Transmission of Infectious Disease During Air Travel

Source: Email October 7, 2014

October 2 - USA Today - Tom Frieden, M.D., Director of Centers for Disease Control, said "at this point there is zero risk of transmission of Ebola on air flight. It does not spread from someone who doesn't have fever or other symptoms."

That's not exactly true (Lancet. 2005. 365:989-96). Ebola spreads in primate's by aerosol transmission and also by direct contact with blood, mucus or other fluids from an infected person. Ebola and Lassa are two viruses that cause hemorrhagic fever.  These viruses have longer incubation periods, making infected passengers potentially symptom-free and unaware that they are infected at the time of travel even though they can spread disease by droplet transmission. These droplets are created by infected persons when they cough, sneeze or speak and the droplets are propelled up to 3 feet and deposited on a susceptible host's eyes or mucous membranes.

Other infectious diseases that can be transmitted during air flight: Tuberculosis, SARS, the common cold, influenza, meningococcal disease, measles, Salmonella, Cholera, smallpox, and others.

What can you do to help yourself?

Defend Yourself From A Viral Attack (Excerpt from my book, How To Save Yourself From A Terrorist Attack)
1 - Wash your hands and face often with soap.
2 - Use diluted bleach to decontaminate skin and inanimate objects
3 - Keep sinus ports open with steam
4 - Hydrogen peroxide - gargle twice a day
5 - Zinc - weekly dose 50-70 mg/day
6 - N-Acetyl Cysteine 600 mg/day
7 - Vitamin C - 2-4 grams/day
8 - Quercetin - 500 mg twice a day
9 - Jet planes should use only outside air for the cabin.  Commercial airlines are a suitable environment for the spread of infectious disease carried by passengers or crew. The air-quality in the cabin is important. Request the pilot to bring in fresh air from the outside. This increases the use of fuel and therefore is not frequently done because of cost. You can also turn off the vents just above your head to prevent that recirculated cabin air from coming directly on your face.

Charles B. Simone, M.MS., M.D. is an Internist (Cleveland Clinic 1975-77), Medical Oncologist (National Cancer Institute 1977-82), Tumor Immunologist (NCI 1977-82), and Radiation Oncologist (University of Pennsylvania 1982-85), and is the Founder of the Simone Protective Cancer Institute (1980). He wrote Cancer and Nutrition, A Ten Point Plan for Prevention and Cancer Life Extension (1981, third revision 2005), The Truth About Breast Health - Breast Cancer (2002), The Truth About Prostate Health - Prostate Cancer (2005), How To Save Yourself From A Terrorist Attack (2001), Nutritional Hydration, Medical Strategy for Military and Athlete Warriors
(2008), helped organize the Office of Alternative Medicine, NIH (1992), helped write the Dietary Supplement, Health and Education Act of 1994, helped win landmark cases against the FDA by showing they violated the First and Fifth Amendment rights of Americans, helped introduce the Health Freedom Protection Act of 2005 (H.R. 2117), was bestowed the first Bulwark of Liberty Award in 2001 by the American Preventive Association and the James Lind Scientific Achievement Award in 2004. He discovered the fundamental mechanism of how complement proteins and human white cells kill; how adriamycin kills cancer cells; and developed the idea of splicing monoclonal antibodies to killing cells that seek out and destroy cancer cells - this he call, directed effector cells. He continues bench research with the NCI showing that proteomic patterns can diagnose specific cancers at earlier stages than we are currently able to do (Lancet Feb 2002, JNCI Nov 2002), as well as clinical research that shows in 61 human studies Antioxidants and Other Nutrients Do Not Interfere with Chemotherapy or Radiation, and Can Increase Kill, Decrease Side Effects, and Increase
Survival (Altern Ther Health Med. 2007. 13(1):22-28; and 13(2):40-46; JNCI Nov 2008).

In 1980 Dr Simone founded the Simone KidStart Prevention Program, the first of its kind. Since 1980 he has worked with inner city churches to teach prevention, detection, and treatment. He is a consultant for heads of state of the US and other countries, celebrities, and advises many governments regarding health care. He testifies for the Senate and House on matters concerning health, cancer, disease prevention, children's health programs, FDA reform, and alternative medicine. He appears on 60 MINUTES, Prime Time Live, Fox News Channel, and others.

Dr Simone coaches some world-class elite endurance athletes, such as Khalid Khannouchi ("Greatest marathoner ever" USA Today Nov 2008), some Gold Medal Olympians, and others. He developed the patented Nutritional Hydration formula (Simone Super Energy) that was first used in desert warfare in 1990, worked closely with Special Operations Forces, and in December 2003 was presented with the Distinguished Speaker Award at the Special Operations Medical Conference in Tampa, FL. Dr Simone is currently
working to improve combat effectiveness using nutritional hydration for the Air Force Special Operations Command at Hurlburt Field, FL.

All of his research in prevention, detection, and treatment culminate to his most compelling work that will positively change the healthcare system. Recognizing a looming health care crisis, he submitted a simple method in 1993 that was finally patented. Dr Simone's method is imperative to follow because of Obamacare. Employees, no matter what duration of employment, pay an increased portion of health insurance premiums AND can voluntarily participate in the program that quantifies costs for
controllable risk factors. Employees can change that behavior or take personal responsibility for the increased cost attributable to the behavior by paying more for insurance. America spends the most on health, ranks last among the top 19 nations, and has one of the highest infant mortality rates. Without Simone's initiative, we will witness the catastrophic collapse of the health system - then America as we know it.

Sacred Fire Gala Logistics

Dear Sacred Fire of Liberty Event Attendee:

We greatly look forward to seeing you at the Sacred Fire of Liberty Gala, September 5 and 6, at the Hyatt Regency Resort, Spa, and Marina in Cambridge, Maryland.  You are part of a group of 300 by-invitation-only  guests  to this extraordinary event. We provide here important details to help guide you during your stay.  You will want to keep a printed copy of this email with you throughout the event.

MOTOR COACH TO THE HYATT on Thursday, September 4.  For those who have reserved motor coach space for arrivals on Thursday, September 4, please look in the BWI baggage claim area for a greeter holding a sign that reads “SACRED FIRE GALA.”  The greeter bearing the sign will be there at 6:20pm.  The greeter will call motor coaches for pick-up.  The motor coaches will leave BWI for the Hyatt promptly at 6:30pm.  If any fail to board the motor coach by the 6:30pm departure time, he or she will need to obtain his or her own transportation to the Hyatt.

MOTOR COACH TO THE HYATT on Friday, September 5.  For those who have reserved motor coach space for arrivals on Friday, September 5, the motor coach will be at BWI Arrival Door Number 8 at 10:50am and 1:50pm.  Please look for a black or white colored motor coach at that location.  In the passenger side front window of the motor coach will be a sign reading “SACRED FIRE GALA.”  Airport security prohibits the motor coaches from remaining stationary at the pick-up location so it is critical to be there at the motor coach arrival times.  The motor coaches will leave BWI for the Hyatt promptly at 11:00am and 2:00pm, respectively.   If any fail to board the motor coach by the 11:00am or 2:00pm departure times, he or she will need to obtain his or her own transportation to the Hyatt.

EVENT REGISTRATION.  After arriving at the hotel and completing hotel check in, look for those in American revolutionary war uniforms.  Those so dressed are your Sacred Fire Gala event guides.  They can answer any questions you have about the event and direct you to the event registration tables.  If you have any concerns about resort features, rooms, and accommodations should be directed to hotel management at the front desk.  At event registration, you will be given an identification badge with your table number and excursion preference imprinted on it, a gift bag containing items of value, the Event Program, complimentary Le Bleu pure water and juice, and instructions.  You will be invited to select your choice of “There’s Gonna Be a Revolution” tee shirt in red, white, or blue and to sign the official gala register (appropriately, with a quill pen and ink).  The event registration area is open on Thursday, September 4, from 2pm to 9pm and on Friday, September 5, from 12pm to 4pm.

ATTIRE.  Friday night’s attire is black tie (men in tuxedos, women in ball gowns, active duty military personnel in dress uniforms).  Saturday morning’s attire for the event excursions is casual.  Saturday night’s attire is business casual.

EVENT TIMES.

September 5 (Reception and Dinner Gala): The program begins on Friday, September 5, at 5PM with a reception outside the Choptank Ballroom.  At exactly 5:45PM, the Choptank Ballroom doors will open and all will be seated for the main black tie event.  The program continues on Saturday morning with excursions.

September 6 (Excursions): All of those who have registered for one of the three excursions (Rand Paul Capitol Hill Tour; VIP Mount Vernon Tour; or VIP Ford’s Theater Tour) should assemble in the lobby of the resort at 6:30AM and approach their respective tour guides to confirm attendance.  The motor coaches to the respective venues will leave promptly at 7AM.  If you are on the Rand Paul Capitol Hill Tour your guides are Bob and Judy Bell.  They will be in the lobby of the resort at 6:30AM wearing red event tee shirts and holding up a sign that reads “CAPITOL HILL.”  If you are on the VIP Mount Vernon Tour your guides are Bob Thornburgh and Geri Fischer.  They will also be in the lobby of the resort at 6:30AM wearing white event tee shirts and holding up a sign that reads “MOUNT VERNON.”  If you are on the VIP Ford’s Theater Tour your guides are Eric and Renee Richardson.  They will be in the lobby of the resort at 6:30AM wearing blue event tee shirts and holding up a sign that reads “FORD’S THEATER.”  Once excursion lists are checked, you will be directed to the motor coaches, will travel to the respective tour venues (about 2 hours away), and will be given a return place and time for departure back to the resort.  Please be sure to return to the location specified by the guides at the time indicated because the motor coaches will depart no later than 15 minutes after that time.  If any fail to return on time to the motor coach, he or she will need to arrange for his or her own transportation back to the resort.

September 6 (Awards Program):  Dinner is not provided by the event sponsors on September 6, so please make your own dinner arrangements for no later than 5PM on September 6, mindful that the start time for the second day’s festivities is 6PM in the Choptank Ballroom.  There are several excellent restaurants within the resort complex.  There will be hors d’oeuvres stations for light meal consumption during the second day’s event at the back of the Choptank ballroom for light dining during the program.  All excursion motor coaches return to the resort by no later than 4PM, affording you time to change and have dinner, but you should make your dinner reservations now through the resort concierge to avoid last minute congestion at the resort restaurants.  The following restaurants are in the resort with their contact phone numbers in parentheses: Michener’s Lounge (does not take reservations) and Water’s Edge Grill (410-901-6400).  We recommend calling in advance of your arrival to make reservations.  That is particularly important because the resort has accommodated our request to have the restaurants open earlier than usual hours on Saturday to accommodate our guests.

MOTOR COACH FROM THE HYATT TO BWI.  Those who have reserved motor coach transportation on Sunday, September 7, need to be in the lobby by no later than 6:00AM to take a motor coach back to BWI.  The motor coaches will leave the resort promptly at 6:10AM for the trip back to BWI.  If any fail to be present before the departure time, he or she will need to arrange for his or her own transportation back to BWI.

We greatly look forward to seeing you at the event and helping make your stay with us as pleasurable as possible.  From all of us, including the event planners, speakers, and entertainers, welcome to this extraordinary tribute to liberty and to America’s first President, the indispensable George Washington.

Sincerely,

The Event Planning Staff: Alisha Boyles, Connie Wood, Lara Flint, Sheryl Morley, Brand Niemann, Marie France Weber, Don Weber, Eric Richardson, Renee Richardson, Stephen Johnson, and Glenn Dewey.

George Washington’s Address

Please go to this YouTube video web site (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GID0TlugfVU)  for the extraordinary address by actor Dean Malissa playing George Washington at the Sacred Fire of Liberty Gala, September 6, 2014, at Cambridge, Maryland.  Using Washington’s own prophetic words, the address so powerfully given by Dean Malissa reveals the stark divide between the Constitution’s intended meaning and the modern regulatory state and executive preference for action independent of Congress.  Please help us cause this remarkable presentation to go viral in the hopes that it will inspire Americans to restore the Founding Fathers’ republic by voting out those responsible for its loss.

Additional videos will soon be dispatched, including the remarkable speeches delivered by Bay Buchanan, Kate Obenshain, and Tammy Bruce at the Gala.

In Honor of Jonathan Emord

On September 5 and 6, 2014, the constitutional and administrative law firm Emord & Associates, P.C. held a spectacular celebration and awards program at the Hyatt Regency Resort in Cambridge, Maryland, on the occasion of its 20th anniversary and in honor of George Washington.

Each of us enjoyed the "Sacred Fire of Liberty Gala" and each of us over the years contributed to the "cause" in a small way.  But only one man, Jonathan Emord, ignited our individual efforts synergistically to become the Beacon of Truth.  Therefore,
IN HONOR OF JONATHAN W. EMORD

In Recognition of you as the Beacon of Truth and Freedom that spans a quarter century

You have written critically acclaimed First Amendment books and professional papers that are the foundation for protecting the liberties of each and every one of us.

Throughout history the world has depended upon a precious few individuals to win and preserve our Great civil rights to Life, to Liberty, and to Health Freedom.

You have been the beginning of the end for FDA speech suppression by celebrating triumph over Government censorship in eight victories in federal courts, more than any other attorney in American history.

In these stormy seas of injustice and suppression, you have torn down the walls of censorship and have become the Freedom Man.

You have inserted yourself in the struggle of right and wrong and good and evil and we Americans are better off for it.

You are grounded in thoughtfulness and knowledge giving us an informed patriotism.  We salute your courage, achievements, and your vision.  You, Jonathan W. Emord, have truly made a difference for hundreds of millions of Americans and people around the world.  We hereby acknowledge you as a courageous Warrior and the Freedom Man.

Charles B. Simone, M.MS., M.D.

Jonathan W. Emord (http://www.Emord.com) graduated from the University of Illinois in1982 and earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1985 from DePaul University.  He has been practicing constitutional and administrative law before the federal courts and agencies since 1985. He began his career in the Federal Communications Commission during the administration of President Ronald Reagan and has maintained an abiding conviction to achieve full First Amendment protection for the freedoms of speech and press. In 1991, his critically acclaimed book, Freedom, Technology, and the First Amendment  chronicled the intellectual foundations of the First Amendment and advocated replacing government control over the airwaves with a title registry, private property rights approach. Emord has practiced law for well-respected firms, served as Vice-President of the Cato Institute, and is a Member of the Governing Council of the International Society of Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology. He practices food and drug law, deceptive advertising law, and libel law, and he served as lead counsel in the landmark Pearson v. Shalala (D.C. Cir. 1999); Pearson v. Shalala (D.C.D.C. 2001); Pearson v. Thompson (D.C.D.C. 2001); and Whitaker v. Thompson (D.C.D.C. 2002) cases, holding FDA censorship of nutrient-disease relationship claims unconstitutional. He also served as lead counsel in the Nutraceutical Corp. v. Crawford (D.Ut.2005). He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court; the United States Courts of Appeal for the D.C., Fourth, Seventh, Ninth, and Tenth Circuits; the United States Court of International Trade; the United States District Courts for the District of Columbia, and others.

Dear Doris, Dr. Simone, and everyone—Your generous praise is quite overwhelming.  There are so many others more deserving, including you both.  Those of us who gathered in Cambridge on September 5 and 6 share a love of country that is greater than self.  Nearly all who attended have dedicated their energies, and lives, to those principles which define American greatness and exceptionalism.  In a matter of days my firm will send to everyone the video file of George Washington’s (actor Dean Malissa’s) address at the gala.  It is my hope that each of you will share that video with as many people as possible (causing it to go viral).  If you love our country as much as we do, there could be no greater immediate demonstration of that love than the act of spreading far and wide the inspiring message George Washington conveyed (to restore the American republic, to re-establish its constitutional principles, and thereby to ensure maximum protection for individual liberty).  Thank you for your kindness, friendship, and support.  It is a great privilege to be in the company of so many giants.  Best regards, Jonathan W. Emord

Sally Fallon Morell

We salute Sally Fallon Morell, recipient of our Excellence in Nutrition Science Award.  Here is her biography:

Sally Fallon Morell is the author of the best-selling cookbook Nourishing Traditions (with Mary G. Enig, PhD), which introduced the fastest growing trends in health and nutrition today--a return to butter, the increasing popularity of pasture-based agriculture, a new acceptance of raw milk, lacto-fermented foods, kombucha and other lacto-fermented beverages, traditionally processed cod liver oil, coconut oil, sourdough baked goods and genuine bone broth. She is also the author of Eat Fat Lose Fat (with Mary G. Enig, PhD), the Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby & Child Care (with Thomas S. Cowan, MD) and Nourishing Broth (with Kaayla T. Daniel, PhD, CCN, September 2014 release).''

Along with Mary G. Enig, PhD and her husband Geoffrey Morell, she founded the Weston A. Price Foundation (http://www.westonaprice.org) in 1999.  The Foundation provides scientific validation for traditional foodways and seeks to return nutrient-dense foods to American tables. The Foundation has over five hundred chapters worldwide, which help health-conscious consumers find raw milk and other traditional farm products, usually purchased directly from farmers.  In her capacity as editor of Wise Traditions, the Foundation's quarterly journal, she has become the nation's primary spokesman for the importance of cholesterol and saturated fat in human diets, and of the safety and health benefits of whole raw milk from pasture-fed cows.

She founded A Campaign for Real Milk in 1998, which has as its goal universal access to clean raw milk.  Thanks to the information provided on the Campaign website (realmilk.com), demand for raw milk and its supply by farmers has increased exponentially during the last fifteen years.

In 2007, Fallon Morell helped set up the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund (farmtoconsumer.org), which provides legal advice and defense for farmers engaged in sales of raw milk and other artisan foods directly to consumers.

Her publishing company, NewTrends Publishing (newtrendspublishing.com), publishes important books on diet and health. Her work has primarily focused on healthy diets for pregnant women and growing children.

Together with her husband, she is the owner of P A Bowen Farmstead (http://pabowenfarmstead.com) in Southern Maryland, which produces award-winning raw cheese, woodlands pork and pasture-raised poultry and eggs.

Introduction

Welcome to the Sacred Fire of Liberty Gala. Tonight renowned national speakers and great entertainers will edify and uplift you. America’s founding principles will once again take center stage. The predominant forces that undermine those principles will be exposed, and all will be rallied to defend the United States against threats domestic and foreign.

Tonight we will also commence the first of a two part awards ceremony, honoring extraordinary individuals whose work has advanced the cause of liberty and freedom of choice around the world.

In the morning we will venture into the heart of the nation’s Capitol on unique and extraordinary excursions, each an opportunity for reflection on the historic efforts undertaken to keep a republican form of government and to defend individual liberty against tyranny. Tomorrow evening we will reunite for more extraordinary speeches. There will be more powerful entertainment. We will regale exceptional physicians, scientists, journalists, and public policy advocates who have enhanced the lives of millions through their innovations, brilliance, courage, persistence, and dedication to freedom of informed choice.

With the aid of dedicated defenders of freedom, with stirring musical performances, with excursions to patriotic venues, and with celebratory tributes to great men and women, we aim to rekindle in you what President George Washington termed “the sacred fire of liberty.” If that sacred fire is extinguished, if the world’s best hope for protection of individual liberty against tyranny fails in its mission, the nation our Founding Fathers consecrated to achieve that end will devolve into despotism. The people’s sovereignty and freedom will then be denied in favor of the power and dictates of those who rule. Rekindling liberty’s sacred fire is thus a necessity if we are to bestow upon future generations the rich blessings of liberty bequeathed to us.

As President Washington put it: "The preservation of the Sacred Fire of Liberty, and the destiny of the Republican model of Government, are justly considered as deeply, perhaps as finally staked, on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people." Each generation of Americans must choose whether to accept Washington’s challenge in order to reap the blessings of liberty or to decline that challenge and suffer the dire consequences that come when freedom and independence are exchanged for servility and dependence.

Americans now struggle to endure burdens from a federal government that seems foreign and hostile to them. Our government has lost its founding identity and has drifted far from its constitutional moorings. Those burdens have grown as the central government has mushroomed in size and scope, a centralization of power that has continued unabated for seven and a half long decades. Our Founding Fathers feared unlimited government and were driven to revolution because of it. Since the 1930’s, we have witnessed the progressive establishment of a government that knows no bounds, of the accumulation of massive debt, and of prolific bureaucracy. Indeed, precious few private ventures commence today without satisfaction of complex and costly federal government rules.

We therefore do well to remember the love of freedom that led America to greatness and became our defining characteristic in the world. Unobstructed action according to our will (limited only by the equal rights of others) has served us well through days of calm and eras of strife. With rights to life, liberty, and property secured, our forebears transformed and uplifted themselves from a rustic people with barely a foothold on an untamed North American continent into a prosperous and thriving people: the envy of the world, the wealthiest and most powerful on earth.

If we who gather here tonight can but remember with patriotic pride that fierce Spirit of Liberty that drove the Founding generation to sacrifice all in order to produce a limited federal republic under a Constitution of Liberty, perhaps we may yet inspire our fellow Americans to restore that republic and reclaim American greatness. From this place and moment we may yet spread Washington’s Sacred Fire, setting a bright example that can once again inspire the world to freedom and progress.

In the earliest days of the American experience, Puritan John Winthrop laid the precedent for American exceptionalism. In his famous 1630 sermon, “A Model of Christian Charity,” wherein he reflected on the parable of Salt and Light in Christ’s Sermon on the Mount,Winthrop called upon the people of the Massachusetts Bay Colony to create a shining “city upon a hill” that would illuminate a world in darkness. From that moment forward, the greatest of American statesmen have heeded Winthrops call to remind the American people of their divine mission.

As we join together tonight in celebration, others across the nation huddle in fear of government power and of government officials who wield that power. They harbor grave doubts about our country’s future. They, like we, cannot help but question whether the self-evident truths of the American Revolution have been abandoned in favor of government control. Each day witnesses a new application of political ambition that trumps individual liberty and compromises the destinies of all Americans. We ask: Do we still possess that government which our Declaration of Independence defines, one based on the Consent of the Governed, one respecting the principle that all are created equal and are endowed by God with unalienable rights to life, liberty and property? Do those in government still honor the Founders’ command that government be dedicated to achieve the end of securing those rights?

Enjoy this moment of wise reflection. Receive its inspiration. Recall what defines us as Americans and leads us to greatness. Share in the hope that this generation may yet rekindle George Washington’s Sacred Fire, ensuring that the forces that seek to extinguish it are themselves vanquished.

Dedication

We dedicate this Gala to George Washington, that great American Commander-in-Chief, President, true friend of liberty, and brave patriot, whose example of leadership, restraint, courage, humility, piety, grace, respect for the rule of law, and mastery of decorum still define good governance.

In his book, Schwitters explains that the European Claims Regulation reflects the idea that free markets will inevitably fail and that, equally inevitably, consumers will suffer unless industry and business operators are placed in a legal straightjacket bearing the words “guilty until proven innocent.” Bert is a member of the Board of the Dutch Health Products Association and in this capacity he also provides legal and regulatory advice to the Association of European Health Products Manufacturers (EHPM).

NE Scientific

Northeast Scientific (NES).png

The entire landscape of a very young medical device reprocessing industry has changed radically in less than 5 years. In that time, a “green” industry that was fostered by an entrepreneurial drive to reduce waste in the spirit of environmentalism virtually disappeared. It was absorbed by the medical device industry’s OEM giants; the very entities the medical device reprocessing industry was founded to put in check.

During those same five years, Northeast Scientific (NES) capitalized on this rapidly changing reprocessing paradigm. NES deployed technology unseen in the industry, kept its strong focus on ever-increasing cost savings for our customers, and expanded reprocessing markets to include advanced, very high-value surgical devices. NES entered the 21st century as a leader among the few remaining independent reprocessors. NES is the only reprocessessor of advanced, high-value, invasive surgical devices.

Hungry for new ways safely and reliably to achieve healthcare cost savings, companies now look to independent NES for reprocessing innovation. NES's high quality-oriented vision driven by our founding surgeons will continue to push the healthcare industry toward more effective and safer ways to provide greater utilization and savings.

NES celebrates individualism, self-reliance, and old fashioned boot-strap entrepreneurship; NES is the capitalist ideal in the medical device reprocessing industry, is a "green" company, and brings about cost savings by multiplying the utility of tens of thousands of otherwise single-use disposable medical devices every year.

NOW Foods

NOWFoods.png

NOWFoods has long advocated sensible regulation, including self-regulation, of the dietary supplement industry. Elwood Richard, NOW's founder, knows that a negative legislative/regulatory environment could prevent consumers from accessing safe dietary supplements that contribute to health. A groundswell of public support, including from NOWFoods and its customers, convinced Congress to pass overwhelmingly the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA) that classified supplements as food and protects access to them. NOWcontinues to use its resources to provide relevant legislative/regulatory information to the grassroots through its large customer base. Advocacy is serious business at NOWFoods.

Palm Springs Life Extension Institute

Palm Springs Life Extension Institute.png

In 1994, the Palm Springs Life Extension Institute was the first clinic in the United States to use Human Growth Hormone on adults for anti-aging and longevity. Dr. Edmund Chein, MD, who founded the Institute, is the original inventor of using bio-identical hormones to lengthen the telomeres, reverse biological age and extend life expectancy. He was granted a patent for the invention in the United States, the British Commonwealth, and China.

At age 61, he has accomplished a biological age measured by telomere length (Life Length, Inc. of Spain) of 34. He offers a cash reward of $15,000 for anyone who can show a greater difference between their calendar age and their biological age (measured by telomere length of the DNA).

Dr. Chein, together with Dr. Cass Terry of the Medical College of Wisconsin, published a 1,000 human subject study on using Human Growth Hormone for anti-aging/longevity purposes. The study showed many benefits in the 1,000 subjects, and that the doctors’ low-dose and high frequency method of giving growth hormone, as contrasted with the traditional high-dose, three times- a-week method, was without side effects. To this day, it is still the only study done with such a large number of human subjects. This evidence was presented in Dr. Chein’s recent book, “Living to 120 and Beyond” (available on www.amazon.com). Dr. Edmund Chein’s work has been reviewed in Newsweek, GQ, Der Spiegel Magazine in Germany, Marie Claire and People magazines.

Dr. Joel D. Wallach

Dr. Joel D. Wallach.png

A Missouri native, Dr. Joel D. Wallach attended the University of Missouri where he received a Bachelor's degree in the Science of Agriculture. A veterinarian for thirty years, he worked as a research veterinary pathologist with The National Institute of Health Center Biology of Natural Systems, Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri and the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center in Atlanta, Georgia, at Emory University.

Having discovered the first animal models for cystic fibrosis (monkeys), he found that he could reproduce their condition at will because it was a nutritional deficiency. His finding offered great promise for children with the disease, but when he made it public, the Institutes fired him on 24- hours notice. Chagrined and perplexed, Dr. Wallach made the decision to go to medical school so he could treat children with cystic fibrosis himself.

He has since pioneered nutritional research in many areas and has pursued health claim petitions with the FDA, most notably defeating FDA censorship of the claim that selenium reduces the incidence of certain kinds of cancer.

He is founder of Youngevity International, Inc. and lectures worldwide on nutritional issues. His global reach and tireless advocacy of optimal nutrition have led millions throughout the world to embrace inexpensive means to improve health and maintain wellness.

Dr. Robert Verkerk

Dr. Robert Verkerk.png

For over three decades, Dr. Robert Verkerk has developed an intimate understanding of tensions arising between science and law, between academia and industry, between government and the people— and not least— between humanity’s internal and external environments.

Along this journey, he has successfully campaigned for changes in healthcare and food production, while achieving success academically, with the award of three science degrees, including a master's and doctorate from Imperial College London, where he also continued as post-doctoral Research Fellow for seven years.

In 2002, he decided it was time to emerge from academia and pull together strategic interests and expertise worldwide to help re-establish a fundamental right to natural healthcare. Given the increasing threat posed by certain industrial, scientific and governmental institutions, in May 2002 he founded the Alliance for Natural Health International (ANH-Intl) to protect and promote natural health worldwide using the tools of "good science" and "good law."

Among Dr Verkerk’s most notable accomplishments have been the initiation of legal challenges against over-zealous governments; education of the public, health professionals and elected representatives on critical issues affecting health and wellbeing; repeated defense of the public's right of access to natural healthcare; and re-establishment of the scientific basis by which risks and benefits of natural modalities in healthcare are assessed. Dr Verkerk has authored some sixty papers in scientific literature and conference proceedings and contributes regularly to magazines and other popular media. He is an accomplished and inspirational speaker and communicator on a wide range of issues relating to sustainability. Dr Verkerk presently lives in Farnborough, Hampshire, UK, is happily married and has six children ranging in ages from 8 to 26.

Jeanne A. Drisko, M.D serves as the Director of the University of Kansas Integrative Medicine (KUIM) Center and is the Hugh D. Riordan Endowed Professor of Orthomolecular Medicine at the University of Kansas. KUIM has grown significantly under her direction.

KUIM is supported by the four pillars of academic medicine: patient care first, followed by research, education and service. Patient care was designed from the outset to be patient centered integrative care assessing individual biochemistry and tailoring therapies to patients' needs and preferences. Natural products are used when appropriate, guided by safety. The robust patient service serves to advise KUIM's research agenda. The research pillar has focused on complementary and alternative medicine practices that are in wide use, such as intravenous vitamin C and chelation therapy for cardiovascular disease. KUIM is the leader in intravenous vitamin C research and a major partner in designing and running the Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT). KUIM's research is translational with preclinical and clinical trials. Publications have included major peer reviewed journals. Dr. Drisko holds multiple Investigational New Drug (IND) numbers from FDA to research natural products.

KUIM is one of a small group of Integrative Medicine fellowships recognized by the American Board of Physician Specialties as qualifying for board examination in integrative medicine. Dr. Drisko designed the curriculum that was subsequently approved by KU Medical Center Graduate Medical Education. Another significant educational advancement occurred with the partnership of KUIM and KUMC Department of Dietetics and Nutrition, resulting in the development and institution of a master's degree program with a certificate in Dietetics and Integrative Medicine. This is the first of its kind in the U.S. in an academic center with clinical experience in dietetics and integrative medicine along with the didactic curriculum.

Dr. Robert I-San Lin

Dr. Robert I-San Lin.png

Dr. Robert I-San Lin has dedicated more than four decades to the advancement of nutrition science and nutrition care. In the early 1970's Dr. Lin conducted research on the role of vitamin B12 and folic acid in neurological development and in cellular mutation. He developed a radioimmunoassay for these nutrients. His work greatly contributed to the accuracy and speed of measuring B12 and folic acid, and early prevention of B12-deficiency dementia. Dr. Lin worked on sensitized photo damage, an injury caused by exposure to visible light that is mediated by singlet oxygen. Dr. Lin found that in experimental animals beta-carotene, a singlet oxygen quencher, mitigated the damage.

Around the mid 1970's, Dr. Lin served as Chief Scientist of PepsiCo/Frito-Lay. He addressed trans fatty acid and high salt intake problems. Cooking oils from soybean, corn and cottonseed were unstable. The food industry hydrogenated them for stabilization. Vegetable oils contain cis unsaturated fatty acids, and hydrogenation creates trans isomers that are unhealthy. Dr. Lin’s efforts led to a reduction of hydrogenated oils in processed food. Similarly, Dr. Lin worked to reduce the salt content of Frito-Lay’s products.

Dr. Lin has studied and practiced traditional Chinese herbal medicine for six decades and has worked on phytochemicals extensively. In 1990, he organized and chaired the First World Congress on the Health Significance of Garlic and Garlic Constituents. His 1994 chapter “Phytochemicals and Antioxidants” helped open a new field in nutrition care. In the early 1980's, Dr. Lin explained the risks of using Ephedra sinica Stapf. in high doses for weight control and warned against unprofessional and indiscriminate use. Dr. Lin is currently writing on the proper use of his herb and traditional Chinese herbal medicine.

Dr. Lin earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, majoring in biophysics and nuclear medicine. He received post-doctoral training at the California Institute of Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in genetic engineering and nutrition. He has served as a senior executive in several leading nutrition-related companies and currently serves as the Executive Vice President of Nutrition International Company.

Dr. Robban Sica

Dr. Robban Sica.png

For the last thirty years, Dr. Robban Sica, MD has been passionate about integrative medicine, which is the synthesis of the best of conventional and alternative therapies, building a sustainable, patientcentered healthcare system focused on prevention and positive treatment outcomes.

Since 1985, Dr. Sica has been practicing integrative medicine with extensive training and experience in bio-identical hormone balancing, endocrine problems, environmental medicine, chelation/detoxification and IV therapies, nutrition, mind-body medicine and many natural and alternative methods of testing and treatment.

She developed Holos Health Center in 1986, followed by the Center for the Healing Arts in 1992, both multi-disciplinary healing centers. Dr. Sica’s practice is based on the belief that health depends on the interplay of who we are and what we eat, drink, breathe, think and feel, including both the physical and the spiritual. Increasing our awareness and choices about our health allows us to find a path to healing and growth.

By getting to underlying causes and contributing factors of disease, Dr. Sica aims to restore health, not just palliate disease. This approach is successful in improving many chronic health problems by, first, determining what underlying deficiencies lower a person’s overall reserves and what stressors are overwhelming those reserves, leading to illness, and by using natural therapies in an integrative fashion to create an individualized treatment plan.

Dr. Sica has volunteered countless hours to a number of integrative, natural health organizations, in an effort to expand public awareness of beneficial complementary medicine alternatives.

Christian Wilde

Christian Wilde.png

Mr. Christian Wilde was a songwriter and independent record producer for Warner Bros, Capitol/EMI and Universal’s UNI Records for eighteen years before leaving the music industry to pursue land development in northern Nevada. While undergoing routine dental work in Los Angeles in 1988, he became convinced that families were being needlessly exposed to pathways of opportune infections and cross-contamination during normal dental visits. It was that realization that inspired him to write his first book, "Diseases and the Dental Office." Many of the protections families enjoy today during routine dental procedures, i.e., sterile packs, barriers, gloves, masks and stronger overall compliance to ADA, were influenced by that early book. In 1997, although himself asymptomatic, he became aware of a cardiovascular problem in his own life whose origin doctors were unable to explain or reverse. As he has explained in his second book, when the researchers designated a 400 coronary calcification score as carrying a ten times greater heart attack risk and with a documented score that would increase to over 3,000, he was compelled to become an advocate, devoting the next five and a half years researching additional causes of heart disease beyond cholesterol. The research culminated in the writing of "Hidden Causes of Heart Attack and Stroke (inflammation, cardiology’s new frontier)." Acknowledged as one of the first books to inform the general public of inflammation’s role in heart disease, the book would be endorsed by the Directors of Cardiology at five major universities with a foreword by MD, Ph.D., Karol Watson, Director of Preventive Cardiology and Director of Lipid and Hypertension Management at UCLA.

Mr. Wilde has written the "Christian Wilde Stem Cell and Turmeric Research Report" for several years, exploring scores of catastrophic diseases already benefiting from stem cell research in FDA trials.

A long way from his initial career as a legitimate singer, Mr. Wilde released a new fourteen song CD in 2013, entitled, "Journey on Hold," featuring eleven of his original songs.
