My Story (June 13, 2014) Word and Healthy Family Lifestyle Training (August 22, 2014) Word

Recent Dialogue with Peggy Lapsley SVCMD/Founder

Data Science for Natural Medicines: Dr. Joel D. Wallach

I was invited to a Youngevity meeting by friends and was so impressed with the presentations and testimonials that I bought the products to try on my family and to do research for this article.

As a data scientist/data journalist, I started to mine for information and data sources that could help me understand and evaluate natural medicines generally and Youngevity specifically. This led me to focus on Dr. Joel D. Wallach and ask the six basic journalistic questions:

Dr. Joel D. Wallach

  • Who is Doctor Joel Wallach?

    • Dr. Wallach's research has resulted in the publication of more than 70 refereed and peer reviewed journal articles in the sphere of nutrition and pharmaceutical research. He has made major contributions to eight multi-authored text and reference books on these subjects. Source: Youngevity Web Site
    • My Note: Dr. Wallach was a 1991 Nobel Prize Nominee - Medicine and Recipient of the 2011 Klaus Schwarz Award recognizing the work of pioneers in the field of trace element research. Source: Youngevity Web Site. My research suggests he is very worthy of these honors and I would like to see him win the Nobel Prize someday for his contributions to science and humanity (including animals).
  • What is Dead Doctors Don’t Lie?

    • "Dead Doctors Don't Lie" was created by Dr. Joel Wallach after years of research on the subject of health and longevity. Wallach discovered that the life span of the average medical doctor in America is several years shorter than that of the average couch potato, which would surprise most people. Dr. Wallach began collecting obituaries of doctors only to find that many were dying of simple nutritional deficiencies, which he was finding could be easily prevented. If doctors really knew the truth about health and longevity they should be living longer than anyone else, not dying sooner than the average couch potato. This premature death pattern proves that doctors are missing some key elements of understanding what it takes to live a longer healthier life. Hence was born the title... "Dead Doctors Don't Lie". My Research

As a data scientists/data journalist, I use tools and sources like Google Search and Wikipedia for authoritative and diverse information. In this case I also used my healthcare provider, Kaiser Permanente, web site. See Drugs & natural medicines below.

All of this research content can be search using Google Chrome Find for this entire MIndTouch (Wiki) page and its index in a and Excel spreadheet and Spotfire.

I got a followup invitation from Brilliant Nutrition to the May 2014 Health Seminar: In May we have a special guest coming to tell us how to get healthy and feel better.  She's specifically focusing on gut health and has a protocol to restore intestinal wellness. Please see attached documents for meeting information and some great uses for plant derived minerals. See Joanne Conaway for Adults and Joanne Conaway for Kids Source: (PDF)

Google Search

One of the most interesting Google search hits said:

Although Youngevity is considered to be a legitimate company some people are calling it a scam. The reason for this is that Dr. Wallach, who is the person behind this liquid mineral supplement, had originally spent 40 years researching, do not consider him to be an expert in human supplements. My Note: This is not true because of who Dr. Joel Wallach is from the above information.

So what to do next? Look at celebrity testimonials on the Youngevity Web Site like:

“Youngevity's high quality health and wellness products are in sync with what I believe to be the foundation of a long and healthy life.”

Look at scathing critics like Skeptic.com: http://www.skepdic.com/wallach.html

Wikipedia

This lead me to see what an authoritative source like Wikipedia had to say about Dietary elements-mineral nutrients:

Dietary elements (commonly known as dietary minerals or mineral nutrients) are the chemical elements required by living organisms.
Some sources state that sixteen chemical elements are required to support human biochemical processes by serving structural and functional roles as well as electrolytes.

So at least we need them, we know which are essential, but from there agreement and proof on specifics are less certain.

Wikipedia goes on to say:

Dietitians may recommend that dietary elements are best supplied by ingesting specific foods rich with the chemical element(s) of interest.

Appropriate intake levels of certain chemical elements have been demonstrated to be required to maintain optimal health. Diet can meet all the body's chemical element requirements, although supplements can be used when some requirements (e.g., calcium, which is found mainly in dairy products) are not adequately met by the diet, or when chronic or acute deficiencies arise from pathology, injury, etc. Research has supported that altering inorganic mineral compounds (carbonates, oxides, etc.) by reacting them with organic ligands (amino acids, organic acids, etc.) improves the bioavailability of the supplemented mineral.

Many elements have been suggested as essential, but such claims have usually not been confirmed. Definitive evidence for efficacy comes from the characterization of a biomolecule containing the element with an identifiable and testable function. One problem with identifying efficacy is that some elements are innocuous at low concentrations and are pervasive (examples: silicon and nickel in solid and dust), so proof of efficacy is lacking because deficiencies are difficult to reproduce.

The Brilliant Nutrition web site says:

No More Guess Work: It's difficult to know what vitamins and minerals you need to take for what ails you. Brilliant Nutrition - Youngevity shows you complete customized packages to address your personal needs with Proven Mineral Based Nutrition.

Why Supplement?: We need to supplement our diet to avoid nutrient deficiency diseases. We simply do not get adequate amounts of essential nutrients from our food supply.

What makes us unique?: Mineral based nutrition. Through a very unique process and from a very special deposit of humic shale( created by composting and compaction of prehistoric plant material over 75 million years ago), we are able to provide you with an exceptional nourishing blend of 90 essential nutrients (plus the antioxidant boost of 115 fruits and veggies) that we fondly refer to as the 90 for Life! This is mineral based nutrition at its finest. Take the 90 nutrients for 90 days and decide for yourself.

Kaiser Permanente

What both the Youngevity and the Brilliant Nutrition web sites do not tell you is what my Kaiser Permanente Web site says about Herbs and Supplements: Choosing Safe Products:

Not all "natural" medicines are created equal. In fact, some are not natural at all. Learn to tell the difference between safe supplements and potentially dangerous products with these tips.

Do your research: Before you take any herb or supplement, check out our research, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, or the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) to find out about:

  • product alerts
  • drug interactions
  • harmful side effects
  • recalls
  • public health advisories

Look up herbs and supplements in the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database® for reliable, up-to-date information on safety and effectiveness.

Which sites are reliable: The number of websites offering health products and supplements grows every day. Some sites offer valuable, reliable information. Others promote false or overstated health claims that aren't backed by scientific research.

The next time you look up health information online, keep in mind the following questions. They'll help you figure out if the site you're visiting can be trusted.

  • Who runs the website?
  • Who pays for the website?
  • Where does the information come from?
  • Is there evidence for the claim?
  • How current is the information?
  • What personal information does the website collect and why?

Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database

So let's look for Youngevity in the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database ® Consumer Edition:

We saw the same urgent need for information for people who do not have a medical background. Every one of our researchers and editors is a trained drug information analyst and we objectively evaluate the scientific evidence, and present it to you here on this website. We have no commercial interest in any product.

Our goal is to help you achieve and maintain optimal health by providing you with useful information. You can use this site to obtain reliable information on herbal remedies, dietary supplements, vitamins, minerals, and other natural products. Many of these products contain several ingredients. When you consider the possible health benefits, safety, and possible side effects of any of these products, be sure to consider each separate ingredient.

The search result gives 194 products, but the links say: This page currently is unavailable due to inactivity.

NaturalMedicinesDatabase-YoungevitySearch.png

In fact every search I do for Youngevity yields the same result at the end of the links. I guess this means there are Youngevity entries, but no details. So I will try to get the details below in my "Dead Doctors Don't Like Database".

Sacred Fire of Liberty Gala Database

My research was aided significantly by my attendance at the recent Sacred Fire of Liberty Gala Awards as follows:

I created a database with 386 rows and 25 columns of the world's foremost medical doctors, researchers, and journalists so I can find more information about each one and the specific awards they received.

Dead Doctors Don’t Lie Database

The Youngevity Web Sites and handout literature provides useful details like:

A start on my Dead Doctors Don't Lie Database is a cross-walk between Appendices A and B in the Dead Doctors Don't Lie Book and authoritative sources like Wikipedia and the scientific literature. My first example is for Mg-Magnesium in the table below:

Dead Doctors Don't Lie Appendix A Dead Doctors Don't Lie Appendix B Wikipedia Scientific Literature

Magnesium is essential to all living organisms and has electro-chemical, catalytic, and structural functions. It activates numerous enzymes and is a constituent of all chlorophyils.

Magnesium is required for the production and transfer of energy for protein synthesis, for contractility of muscle and excitability of nerves, and as a cofactor in myriad enzyme systems. AN EXCESS OF MAGNESIUM WILL INHIBIT BONE CALCIFICATION . Calcium and Mg have antagonistic roles in normal muscle contraction, calcium acting as the stimulator and Mg as the relaxer. An excessive amount of Ca can induce signs of Mg deficiency.

Asthma is a respiratory disease that is characterized by sudden onset with closure of bronchial tubes by spasmodic muscles. ATOPIC ASTHMA has eczema as a feature along with the respiratory disease. Asthma is a disease of malabsorption with essential fatty acid deficiencies and deficiencies of manganese and magnesium.Treatment should include betaine HCL, pancreatic enzymes, and ox bile at 75-200 mg each t.i.d. before meals. Autoimmune urine therapy, essential fatty acids at 5 gm t.i.d., and plant derived colloidal mineral suspension that contains magnesium and manganese should be taken. Source: Page 284 In human biology, magnesium is the eleventh-most-abundant element by mass in the human body. Its ions are essential to all living cells, where they play a major role in manipulating important biological polyphosphate compounds like ATP, DNA, and RNA. Hundreds of enzymes, thus, require magnesium ions to function. Magnesium compounds are used medicinally as common laxatives, antacids (e.g., milk of magnesia), and in a number of situations where stabilization of abnormal nerve excitation and blood vessel spasm is required (e.g., to treat eclampsia). Magnesium ions are sour to the taste, and in low concentrations they help to impart a natural tartness to fresh mineral waters. Source

The 2-to-1 Calcium-to-Magnesium Ratio by A. Rosanoff, Ph.D. Director of Research & Science Information Outreach, Center for Magnesium Education & Research, LLC, http://www.MagnesiumEducation.com

The 2-to-1 calcium-to-magnesium ratio (2:1) was first suggested by the French magnesium researcher Jean Durlach as a high limit not to be exceeded, when he warned against excessive calcium relative to magnesium intakes; that is, one's calcium intake for all sources including food, water and supllments should not exceed one's total magnesium intake by nore than 2 parts calcium to 1 part magnesium on a weight basis.

There is no good evidence that magnesium supplementation is helpful in treating high blood pressure.[51] Low serum magnesium levels are associated with metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus type 2 and hypertension.[52] Low serum magnesium levels have been associated with a higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome.[53] Magnesium therapy is recommended by the ACC/AHA/ESC 2006 Guidelines for Management of Patients With Ventricular Arrhythmias and the Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death for patients with ventricular arrhythmia associated with torsades de pointes who present with long QT syndrome as well as for the treatment of patients with digoxin intoxication-induced arrhythmias.[54] Magnesium is also the drug of choice in the management of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia.[55] Source IN PROCESS

Slide 1 Data Science for Natural Medicines: Dr. Joel Wallach

Hello. My name is Dr. Brand Niemann and I am a data scientist/data journalist with Semantic Community in the Washington DC area. I want to quickly show you the highlights of my Data Science for Natural Medicines: Dr. Joel Wallach research. The Wiki Pages for Semantic Community and my story are shown on the first slide.

Slide 2 Overview

I was invited to a Youngevity meeting by friends and was so impressed with the presentations and testimonials that I bought the products to try on my family and to do research for this article.

As a data scientist/data journalist, I started to mine for information and data sources that could help me understand and evaluate natural medicines generally and Youngevity specifically. This led me to focus on Dr. Joel D. Wallach (the founder of Youngevity) and ask the six basic journalistic questions. I also used six research tools and data sources for My Research and provide Some Conclusions and Next Steps in the last slide.

Slide 3 Who is Doctor Joel Wallach?

The Youngevity's web site says: Dr. Wallach's research has resulted in the publication of more than 70 refereed and peer reviewed journal articles in the sphere of nutrition and pharmaceutical research. He has made major contributions to eight multi-authored text and reference books on these subjects.

I noted that Dr. Wallach was a 1991 Nobel Prize Nominee - Medicine and Recipient of the 2011 Klaus Schwarz Award recognizing the work of pioneers in the field of trace element research. My research suggests he is very worthy of these honors and I would like to see him win the Nobel Prize someday for his contributions to science and humanity (including animals).

Slide 4 What Is Dead Doctors Don’t Lie?

Again the Youngevity's web site says: "Dead Doctors Don't Lie" was created by Dr.

I noted that Dr. Wallach was/is a “data scientist” like me:)

Slide 5 Highlights from Dead Doctors Don't Lie

The next slide shows 5 highlights from Dead Doctors Don't Lie on the Youngevity web site. The two I want to highlight are:

Many major diseases have been eliminated in the livestock industry years ago by simple inexpensive nutritional supplementation.

Dr. Wallach said recently this was done "because we do not have health insurance policies for livestock."

Our bodies need no less than 90 essential nutrients. There are as many as 10 deficiency diseases that can result for each nutrient that is missing for any length of time. This is a total of up to 900 diseases that can be prevented with proper nutrition.

Dr. Wallach said that $100 Billion of research supports that every tissue and organ in our bodies need all of those for life, not just a few of them for a period of time.

I have done a table based on his book that shows the 10 minerals that account for 223 deficiency diseases.

Slide 6 Why 90 Essential Nutrients For Life 1?

The answer that Dr. Wallach and Youngevity give to this question is distilled in the next two slides of a marketing brochure on the Youngevity 90 for Life Web site. There is a lot of information here and I found it easier to have someone explain this to me in pieces that try to comprehend it all at once. I also found it easier to understand by reading the book.

Slide 7 Why 90 Essential Nutrients For Life 2?

Simply put: Over 40 years of research and experience led to the book in 1999 and to the nutritional supplement products from Youngevity founded in 1997 and has become a personal crusade and grass roots education movement of many free seminars and syndicated radio shows.

Slide 8 How are 90 Essential Nutrients Important in 4 Categories of Health Challenges?

This slide shows a Self Evaluation form on the Youngevity 90 for Life Web site to help map your health symptoms (Challenges) to 4 major categories that then tell you the additional supplementation needed beyond the 90 for Life.

Again, I did not fully appreciate the value of this until I heard Dr. Wallach in person recently where he demonstrated an amazing ability to listen to a person's health symptoms and then tell them why they needed the 90 for Life and additional specialized supplementation products. I am glad I made a WebEx recording of this because it has to be seen and heard to be understood. One comment that captured the essence of this unique experience was: When have you ever gone to the doctor and had him listen to you without interruption and distraction and then give your such personalized and specific instructions and then offer for you to follwoup by calling in to his radio program and telling the hosts that Dr. Wallach had told you to followup!

Slide 9 Where is 90 for Life Youngevity?

This slide tries to capture where Dr. Wallach and Youngevity are going: Dr. Wallach on a personal crusade of grass roots education and Youngevity scaling up to handle that with network marketing.

Recently Dr. Wallach addressed some criticism of his going forward with network marketing in Youngevity and I thought his answer was brilliant: He said I asked a doctor recently about how many patients do you see in a typical day and his response was about 50, and occasionally maybe a 1,000 when we staff up to do physicals for companies, and then it takes me  and my assistants about 3 days to catch up with all the paperwork. Dr, Wallach then says I calculated how many patients (clients) I see a day and it is between 3-5 million with my physician assistants (distributors) and my seminar and radio audience. Now we are into 50 countries and growing rapidly, so network marketing, which is not a pyramid scheme because all my physician assistants get paid by productivity and not seniority, is the way to scale this education and distribution movement.

Slide 10 When Can I Learn More About This?

This slide show the announcement of the recent "Health Interview That Will Change Your Life" event that I attended and recorded on WebEx. I found this to be an amazing experience to hear the speakers and especially see Dr, Wallach practice nutrition science with people that lined both isles and went on for several hours.

One of my favorite sound bytes: When in doubt about what to eat so 90 for Life nutritional supplementation really works, follow the Chinese diet of rice and sweet potatoes that 1.2 billion Chinese people mostly eat and are very healthy.

Slide 11 My Research

This nest slides shows the 6 areas of my research so far starting with what most do: Search Google

Slide 12 Google Search

One of the most interesting Google search hits said:

Slide 18 Some Conclusions and Next Steps

Dr. Wallach made at least three key points in his January 10th seminar that were very important and convincing to me:

  • He has had considerable success with helping couples overcome infertility with nutritional supplementation;
  • Children need nutritional supplementation because the 8 leading baby foods contain less the required nutrition; and
  • Continue to take your prescribed medications when starting the 90 For Life and Special Nutrition for Health Challenges, return to your doctor for tests and evaluation to see if your health is improving as it should, ask your doctor to reduce or eliminate your prescribed medications, and return for more tests and evaluations. If the 90 for Life and Special Nutrition for Health Challenges is not working call-in to Dr. Wallach's Radio Show to ask him why.

Some Conclusions and Nest Steps are:

  • The Answers to the Six Journalistic Questions About Dr. Joel D Wallach and Youngevity are Available and Convincing.
  • My Research Leads Me to Building a Knowledge Base that Can be Used to Build a Dead Doctors Don’t Lie Database.
  • My ultimate goal is a "grand data-driven discovery challenge" we have started to work on that would integrate Semantic Medline, JHU geonomic databases, and nutritional databases with Dr. Phil Bourne at NIH.

I led a data science team that used the National Institute of Health’s Pub Med in a more powerful form called Semantic Medline, that shows the relationships (or lack thereof) between symptoms-diseases-treatments, and found that for two of the most serious illnesses known to man, schizophrenia and cancer, certain enzymes have been found to control the symptoms of schizophrenia and cancer immunotherapy has become more effective than chemotherapy (strengthening the bodies immunity to cancer rather than killing the cancer while almost killing the person). The latter result we reported a full year before the prestigious publication, Science, declared the greatest break-through in cancer research in 2013 was that cancer immunotherapy was becoming more effective than chemotherapy.

Both these results support what Dr. Wallach and other visionary doctors and scientists have been saying for many years, namely that strengthening the body’s natural immunity with the right type and quantity of nutrients is the best integrative medicine.

Our data science team has also recently analyzed the Open FDA release of adverse drug events which caught the attention of senior FDA officials for our innovation. So clearly natural medicines not only work, but they do not cause the adverse side-effects (even death) that prescribed medicines have. History shows that these two related, but negative facts to the drug manufacturing companies, have been kept from the public by the FDA.

Bottom Line: Youngevity and others have fought the FDA over nutrition claims and release of adverse drug events data and have now won, and data science and tools like Semantic Medline are starting to show that the practice of medicine should become the science of medicine, which will be informed by increasing use of clinical, genetic, and nutrition data.

I was invited to a Youngevity meeting by friends and was so impressed with the presentations and testimonials that I bought the products to try on my family, especially my ill wife, and to do research for this article. I tell others that I worked for 30+ years as a federal government employee to provide my wife with the very best medical care, and recently, with Youngevity, I have now been able to provide her with the very best nutritional care that is really helping her and me.

As a data scientist/data journalist I started to mine for information and data sources that could help me understand and evaluate natural medicines generally, and Youngevity specifically.

My Kaiser doctor suggested I look up herbs and supplements in the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database® for reliable, up-to-date information on safety and effectiveness. The search result gives 194 products for Youngevity, which I find impressive that Youngevity ingredients are listed there.

My research was aided significantly by my recent attendance at the Sacred Fire of Liberty Gala Awards where the most outstanding doctors, scientists, and journalists were recognized for:

Excellence in Nutrition Science Award

Excellence in Integrative Medicine Award

Excellence in Medical Research Award

Excellence in Health Product Innovation Award

Excellence in Health Journalism Award

I have compiled a database for that amazing event.

Liquid Minerals for Optimal Health*

Youngevity offers the highest quality and most comprehensive line of liquid mineral supplements. These unique and healthful formulas were developed by Joel D. Wallach, DVM, ND, biochemical research pioneer known to many as The Mineral Doctor. The foundation for each formula is Plant Derived Minerals™.* (See Below from PDF)

Plant Derived Minerals™ - 32 fl oz

Item ID: 13203
http://youngevity.com/prod-overview/?prod=13203

Our bodies need a steady stream of minerals, many in trace amounts, to function properly. Plant Derived Minerals™ are liquid concentrates containing up to 77 minerals from prehistoric plants in their unaltered colloidal form.*

Product Categories:
Minerals: There are 84 elements on the periodic table, most are minerals. The human body is made up of many major and trace minerals. The body cannot produce minerals therefore these nutrients must be injested. Many health professionals believe we need 60 or more of these nutrients daily to promote optimal health.

Gluten-Free: Excludes foods and supplements containing gluten, a protein composite found in wheat, barley, rye and triticale; harmful to individuals suffering from Celiac disease or that are gluten intolerant.

Why Minerals?

Minerals have a role in nearly every bodily function, from building healthy bones and teeth, to energy production, to immune support. In fact, minerals are so crucial to so many aspects of our health that even slight imbalances of some minerals can have major consequences. For example, iron is crucial to the transport of oxygen by red blood cells throughout the body. But an imbalance can range from low energy levels to gastrointestinal issues.

Dietary minerals can be delivered in different forms. Plant Derived Minerals™ are delivered in liquid colloidal form.* Colloidal minerals are derived from plant matter and are the smallest and most bioavailable mineral form.*

Are You Getting Enough of These Important Nutrients?

As inorganic substances, minerals can’t be synthesized by the human body. Instead, they have to be obtained from the foods we eat. But modern unhealthy diets high in poor quality, processed foods, combined with mineral-depleted topsoil and crops, have made it difficult for most people to get adequate amounts of these essential nutrients.1

Mineral-deficient Soil and Crops

When dinosaurs ruled the earth 75 million years ago, they were likely living in an environment abundant with life-supporting minerals. Soil was laden with as many as 70 known minerals, which were absorbed through the root systems of plants to become part of a vibrant, life-sustaining food supply.

Over time, erosion and unwise farming methods have depleted our topsoil of its precious mineral content.2 Ironically, modern technology has only exacerbated this problem. Compared to 50 years ago, today’s farmers are able to produce double or even triple the yields of most major fruits, vegetables, and grains. But the nutrient content of the crops is lower than ever before.3

Plant Derived Minerals™

Plant Derived Minerals™ provide the following benefits*

  • Liquid colloidal form. Plants absorb metallic minerals from soil then convert them into colloids. Colloids are tiny particles that retain their identity even while suspended in liquid, making them highly bioavailable, or absorbable.*
  • Plant-derived. Extracted from humic shale, a layer of earth formed from ancient, mineral-laden plants. As a mineral source, humic shale is superior to other sources commonly used in supplements, such as bentonite (ground up clay) or dried sea beds (ground up rocks).
  • Enhanced bioavailability and detoxification. As in plants, Plant Derived Minerals™ have a natural negative electrical charge. This has two very important benefits: First, it may enhance the transport and bioavailability of other nutrients. Secondly, it may support the body’s natural detoxification of toxins and heavy metals.* 4
  • Pure and natural. Plant Derived Minerals™ are extracted from humic shale using pure, cool clear water to the desired concentration and then processed through a complex array of special filters, leaving only the organic colloidal minerals in the final solution. No preservatives, flavorings, or synthetic substances are added.
  • Safer form of minerals. Plant Derived Minerals™ are well-researched for safety and toxicity.*

Natural medicines database: Search vitamins and herbs

Many people think that just because a remedy is natural, it must be safe. But when something is strong enough to have an effect, it's also strong enough to have side effects — and possibly interact with other medications.

We've teamed up with the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database to bring you reliable information so you can make smart decisions about taking vitamins, herbs, and other supplements.

The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database gives you the tools to:

  • find safety and effectiveness updates for each product and ingredient
  • check for interactions between natural products and other medications
  • look for herbs and supplements with a "seal of approval"
  • see whether a natural product is accepted to treat your condition

Before using any new medication (including over-the-counter drugs, herbs, or supplements), it's a good idea to discuss its safety and effectiveness with your doctor or pharmacist. It's also important to find out how it will interact with any medication you're currently taking.

About the Database

Source: http://naturaldatabaseconsumer.thera...C&page=aboutdb

Our goal is to help you achieve and maintain optimal health by providing you with useful information. You can use this site to obtain reliable information on herbal remedies, dietary supplements, vitamins, minerals, and other natural products. Many of these products contain several ingredients. When you consider the possible health benefits, safety, and possible side effects of any of these products, be sure to consider each separate ingredient. We provide you the information and tools on this website to help you evaluate natural products.

It is important to know what we don't do! We don't sell any products such as herbs, supplements, vitamins, minerals, magnets, tapes, etc. We only sell information. We provide only unbiased, scientifically reliable information. We don't take advertising from anyone: no pop ads, no annoying email spam, no articles written by manufacturers. Every one of our researchers and editors is a trained drug information analyst and we objectively evaluate the scientific evidence, and present it to you here on this website. We have no commercial interest in any product.

Therapeutic Research has been giving practical information about drugs to pharmacists and physicians for 20 years. Our researchers and editors publish Pharmacist's Letter and Prescriber's Letter. When we recognized the urgent need for scientifically reliable information about natural products, we developed Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database PROFESSIONAL Version for medical professionals. U.S. News and World report calls Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database PROFESSIONAL Version "the scientific gold standard for medical professionals and avid users."

We saw the same urgent need for information for people who do not have a medical background. That's why we developed Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database CONSUMER Version. It is written by the same "gold standard" research and editorial team and relies on the same "gold standard" information as the PROFESSIONAL Version. We just write it so that it is not a chore to read...even if you don't have a medical background.

Introduction

The Database contains the most comprehensive listing of brand name natural medicine products. There are many thousands of brand name products and more are being introduced everyday. These many thousands of brand name products are made from over 1,000 different natural ingredients.

This Database will tell you the ingredients that are in the brand name products, and will give you information about the individual ingredients.

The Database is updated DAILY by the editors who review thousands of references from the medical literature each year.

There are two versions of Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database. The CONSUMER version provides information written in a form that most consumers find useful. Sophisticated medical concepts are explained in consumer-friendly language.

The PROFESSIONAL version of Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database is designed for medical professionals. It provides highly scientific and detailed information about the natural medicines, plus it also provides a Patient Education Handout on each ingredient that is suitable for medical professionals to print and hand to a patient.

Consumers who are using the CONSUMER version of Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, and feel that they need more sophisticated or detailed information, should look in the PROFESSIONAL version of Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database or ask their health professional to look for them.

There are many ways to find information in the Database. You can search for a particular ingredient, or search for a brand name product that contains multiple ingredients.

You can search for products that are effective for a particular condition or look for interactions. You can also search for diseases or conditions.

Or, you can browse a list of products that includes ingredients and brand name products. Click here to go straight to the search page...or click here to learn more about each search option.

The Database gives you different types of information depending on what you are searching for. If you search for a brand name natural product, the Database will show you products by that brand name and then you will be able to click the brand name. By clicking this, you will see all the ingredients of that brand name product. You will be able to click on the ingredients to learn lots of details about them.

You will also be able to click on three options "Is It Effective?" "Are There Safety Concerns?" "Are There Any Interactions with Medications?" Clicking any of these three options will give you detailed information to answer the question about the brand name product.

If you search for a natural ingredient, the Database will find the ingredient and then give you an opportunity to click "Read Detailed Information." By clicking this link you will see the CONSUMER version monograph for this natural ingredient. You will also have an opportunity to click again to see all the brand name products that contain this natural ingredient.

The Database also gives you information about natural products that may be useful for certain conditions. By typing in the disease or condition in the search area that says "I Want to Search for a Condition" the Database gives you a list of natural products that with an effectiveness rating for that condition.

Detailed Information Monographs

Detailed Information tells you about a particular herb or dietary supplement. It discusses detailed scientific information about the ingredients that you will find in brand name products you might purchase.

The "Brands" link at the top of each Detailed Information will show you a list of brand name products that contain the herb or supplement as an ingredient.

The "Print Version" link at the top of each Detailed Information will allow you to print a great looking copy for future reference.

In each Detailed Information, you will find these sections:

Other Names
Many herbs and dietary supplements are known by more than one name. The most commonly used name is in ALL CAPS in the title. We also list other common names used to describe the product here.

What is it
We tell you about the product. For example, we'll tell you whether the product is an herb, fruit, seed, etc ... or whether whole plant is used, or just one part ... or if it is a substance that is found in foods or other products.

Effectiveness
The Effectiveness ratings in the Database are EVIDENCE-BASED. The FDA doesn't regulate herbs and dietary supplements like prescription drugs. Herbs and dietary supplements can be sold without ANY proof of effectiveness or safety. Our team evaluates all of the medical literature to give you Effectiveness ratings based on the best scientific evidence.

We rate each product for a particular use or condition. If a product is used to treat more than one condition, you may find different effectiveness ratings for each use.

Here are the ratings you will see...
EFFECTIVE = This product has passed a rigorous scientific review (similar to and as rigorous as the review of drugs done by the FDA) ... and found to be effective for a specific use.
LIKELY EFFECTIVE = Reputable scientific references generally agree that the product is effective for a specific use ... and at least two scientifically rigorous studies (involving at least several hundred patients) found the product to be likely effective ... and the studies are published in reputable scientific journals.
POSSIBLY EFFECTIVE = Reputable scientific references suggest that the product might work for a specific use ... and at least one study (in humans) found that the product might be effective.
POSSIBLY INEFFECTIVE = Reputable scientific references suggest that the product might not work for a specific use ... and at least one study (in humans) found that the product might not be effective.
LIKELY INEFFECTIVE = Reputable scientific references generally agree that the product is not effective for a specific use ... and at least two scientifically rigorous studies found the product likely to be ineffective ... and the studies are published in reputable scientific journals.
INEFFECTIVE = Most reputable scientific references agree that the product is not effective for a specific use ... and no reliable human studies show the product to be effective.
INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE TO RATE = If we know claims are being made about a product but there is no scientific info available about the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the product, we'll let you know.

How it Works
We tell you how the product might work in the human body to produce the effects described above ... and describe any other effects the product may have on you. Often it is not known how a product might work.

Safety Concerns
We tell you about possible side effects here. Some may be minor ... some may be very serious. We'll let you know what to watch for here.

Be sure to check for the "Do not take if..." list in this section, where we tell you who should never take this product.

If you have any particular health concerns (e.g., pregnancy, diabetes, high blood pressure) be sure to check here for any special precautions that might pertain to you.

Interactions
We'll discuss possible interactions with prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, other herbs and supplements, alcohol, tobacco, caffeine ... or anything else that has been shown to cause an interaction.

If you take any medications (including prescription and over-the-counter drugs) ... consume alcohol, tobacco, or caffeine ... or take any other herbs or supplements, be sure to check here for any potential interactions.

Product Information (Brand Names)

The Product Information discusses Brand Name Products that are manufactured and sold to consumers. We list over six thousand brand name products in our database. We'll let you know the manufacturer and the ingredients.

Most brand name products contain many ingredients. It is essential that you consider how all of the ingredients will work together. We have three great tools to help you evaluate a brand name product...

Is it Effective?

Youngevity International (YGYI) Announces Results of Youngevity® Research Studies Performed by the Richardson Center for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals – University of Manitoba

Source: http://youngevity.com/news-events/yo...y-of-manitoba/

San Diego, CA – May 28, 2014 – Youngevity International, Inc. (OTCQX: YGYI) (http://www.YGYI.com), a global direct marketer of lifestyle and nutritional products and gourmet coffee, announced today the exciting results of research studies performed at the prestigious Richardson Center for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals (RCFFN) at the University of Manitoba (http://www.rcffn.ca).

The RCFFN is one of the most advanced bioprocessing and product development facilities in the world that focuses on the research, discovery, and development of innovative functional foods and nutraceuticals. The research team at the RCFFN evaluated the safety and health benefits of the following Youngevity® signature products; Beyond Tangy Tangerine 2.0 and the Healthy Start Pak 2.0, which consists of the Beyond Tangy Tangerine 2.0, Beyond OsteoFx 2.0, and Ultimate Essential Fatty Acids.

The study was overseen by Dr. Peter Jones, Director of the RCFFN and one of the world’s foremost researchers in dietary and nutraceutical determinants in the control of fat, energy metabolism, and various other critical health issues. Additionally, the study was conducted by Dr. Ramprasath Vanu Ramkumar, Adjunct Professor and Research Associate for the Department of Human Nutritional Sciences at the University of Manitoba.

“When initially developing the study outline for Youngevity, it was critical to investigate the important areas where the products could be of benefit and demonstrate a high level of safety, I believe we have accomplished that, these were very well thought out studies,” said Dr. Peter Jones, RCFFN Director.

Youngevity Research Study Results

Safety: RCFFN tested various levels of organ functions and metabolism to demonstrate the safety of Beyond Tangy Tangerine 2.0, Beyond OsteoFx 2.0, and Ultimate Essential Fatty Acids. The biochemical indicators and measurement showed normal functioning and metabolism of the liver, kidneys, and heart after supplementation with Beyond Tangy Tangerine 2.0 and the Healthy Start Pak 2.0 demonstrate no adverse reactions to these organs.

Weight Loss: Consumption of the Beyond Tangy Tangerine 2.0 as well as the Healthy Start Pak 2.0 significantly reduced the absolute weights of White Adipose Tissue (WAT) as well as WAT weight percentage of whole body weight. The study showed a significant reduction in adipose tissue weight and body fat mass.

Bone Health: Significant reductions in plasma concentrations of Alkaline Phosphatase, ALKP, an enzyme that promotes breakdown of bone were observed along with increases in concentrations of the bone building minerals, calcium and phosphorus.

Support for Normal Inflammatory Response: Inflammation was induced in the animal models by feeding them a high fat and sugar diet that triggers the Interleukin-6 inflammatory marker. After supplementation with both the Beyond Tangy Tangerine 2.0 and Healthy Start Pak 2.0 a significant reduction of the inflammatory marker was observed demonstrating support for normal inflammatory responses when placed under stressful conditions.

“It’s very important that studies such as these are done in a unbiased, highly respected, academic setting. Consumers can feel confident in the results of these studies because of the “arms length” relationship that RCFFN had with Youngevity, we reported everything we found,” said Dr. Ramprasath Vanu Ramkumar, University of Manitoba Associate Professor.

Building on the previous research Youngevity performed with Clemson University, the RCFFN study results further substantiate the incredible potential value and benefit our consumers can receive with the Youngevity products. Youngevity is one of the few companies that provide such comprehensive research along with their products and we are proud to do so,” said Sanjeev Javia, Youngevity Scientific Advisory Board Member.

“For over 15 years, Youngevity has been committed to science backed nutrition and providing the highest quality nutrients, dietary supplements, and wellness products to our distributors and customers,” said Steve Wallach, CEO and Chairman of Youngevity. “We are very excited and proud of the research results achieved on our signature products by the world-class researchers at the prestigious Richardson Center for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals. The research studies performed on our products at Clemson University in 2012 and the University of Manitoba provide further support for the value and health benefits that we believe can be obtained from our products and Youngevity’s dedication to research and innovation.”

Studies Will Evaluate Potential Effects of Youngevity Products on Human Biomarkers

July 2012

SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Growing direct-selling conglomerate Youngevity® Essential Life Sciences (http://www.Youngevity.com) announces it has signed an agreement to initiate a series of clinical research studies at Clemson University’s Institute of Nutraceutical Research. Formally titled "Research Studies on Anti-Cancer and Anti-Inflammatory Efficacy and Safety of Youngevity Nutraceutical Products," the research will be overseen by Professor Chittaranjan Kole, Director of Research at the Institute, who is a specialist in plant genomics, phytomedicine and nutriomics. Youngevity Essential Life Sciences is a wholly owned subsidiary of AL International (PINKSHEETS: JCOF) (http://www.alintjcof.com), a global marketer of lifestyle and nutritional products and services and gourmet coffee.

The placebo-controlled, validation research studies will not be tested in humans, however will be testing specific human biomarkers, including inflammation, bacterial, and disease management. Products featured in Youngevity’s "90 for Life" campaign, including its signature "90 Essential Nutrients" blend, will be used primarily in these early studies. The research will build on work performed by Youngevity cofounder Dr. Joel Wallach over the course of 30 years. The Clemson University studies will begin immediately and will conclude by the end of 2012. Youngevity expects to continue to work with a variety of academic and private organizations to further study the potential effects of its products on various health markers.

"We are excited to work with Youngevity," said Dr. Kole. "Research such as the studies that Youngevity is performing further the intent of this Institute and the entire field of Nutraceuticals. This is a very exciting time for all of us."

Is found in igneous rocks at 41,000 ppm, shale at 22,1000 ppm, sandstone at 39,100 ppm, limestones at 302,000 ppm, fresh water at 15 ppm. sea water at 400 ppm, soils at 7,000 to 500,000 ppm (lowest in acid soils and highest in limestone or alkaline soils), marine plants at 10,000 to 300,00 ppm (highest in calcareous tissue-red, blue-green, and green algae and diatoma), land plants 18,000 ppm, marine animals 1,500 to 20,000 ppm, 350,000 in calcarious tissue (sponges, coral, molluscs, echinoderms, land animals at 200 to 85,000 ppm, 260,000 ppm in mammalian bone, 200 to 500 ppm in soft tissue, and at levels lower than 5 ppm in red blood cells. Calcium is essential for all organisms and is found in the cell walls of plants, all calcareous tissues, and mammalian bones.Calcium also helps regulate electrochemical functions in cells and activates several enzymes.

Calcium is the fifth most abundant mineral element in the earth's crust and biosphere. There is evidence that clearly shows humans are designed to consume and use high calcium diets. The late Paleolithic period of 35,000 to 10,000 years ago was the most recent time that our human forebears lived in the environment for which they had been biochemically designed. The agricultural revolution occurred 10,000 years ago and it reduced the wide variety of wild foods in the human food chain while it increased food energy (calories). These dietary changes universally and forever decreased man's dietary intake of minerals, trace minerals, and rare earths. The uncultivated food plants and wild game commonly available to Stone Age humans would supply 1,600 mg at basal energy intakes and between 2,000 and 3,000 mg of calcium at the energy levels required to support hunting and work.

During the 20th century, American adults have a calcium intake of only one-fifth to one-third as much as did Stone Age humans. The National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey II reports a medicine calcium intake for American women of between 360 and 500 mg per day and only 680 mg for men.

Common Calcium Deficiency Diseases

  • Osteoporosis
  • Kyphosis
  • Dowager's hump
  • Lordosis
  • Legg-Perthe's disease
  • Compression fractures
  • Spontaneous fractures
  • Receding gums
  • Osteomalacia
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Degenenerative arthritis
  • Ankylosing spondyitis
  • Hypertension
  • Insomnia
  • Kidney stones
  • Bone spurs (heel spurs)
  • Calcium deposits
  • Cramps and twiches
  • PMS
  • Sciatica
  • Low back pain
  • Bell's Palsy
  • Tinnitis
  • Wallach's vertigo
  • Trigerminal neuralgia
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism
  • Osteofibrosis
  • Tetany
  • Panic attacks
  • Elevated blood calcium
  • Prolonged clotting time

Other nutrients that are commonly found in the American diet aggravate the national calcium deficiency. Diets rich in salt and phosphates (protein and soft drinks) result in an increased calcium "cost". In effect these foods increase the requirements for calcium. Urinary calcium loss increased from 96 mg per day to 148 mg per day when food was heavily salted. As phosphate intake is doubled the output of urinary calcium increases 50 per cent.

There are no less than 147 deficiency diseases that can be attributed to calcium deficiencies or imbalances. The most recent clinical research clearly points out that the entire scope of American diets are critically deficient in calcium. The only practical way to get enough calcium in through supplementation. Interestingly, the allopathic physicians who did the study failed in their duty. Instead of simply recommending effective calcium supplementation, they recommend eating five cups of broccoli a day a as a valuable source of calcium. Try and get kinds to eat that!

The more common calcium deficiency diseases are easy to recognize and run from poor clotting time of the blood when you nick yourself shaving (calcium is a cofactor in the clotting mechanism), arthritis (which physicians traditionally treat with pain killers), to dozens of variations.of osteoporosis.

Famous people who have suffered from calcium deficiency include Pope John Paul II (fractured hip/osteoporsis), Elizabeth Taylor (osteoporsis/hip replacement surgery), "Bo" Jackson (fractured hip/osteoporsis), Bill Walton, a vegan of professional basketball fame (knee, foot, and bone spurs), Ted William of baseball fame (osteoporsis and arthritis, etc.).

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body. The average male has 1,200 grams and the average female has 1,000 grams. Calcium makes up two percent of the adult body weight (water makes up 65 to 75 percent). Calcium also composes up to 39 percent of the total mineral reserves of the body (ash). Ninety-nine percent of the body calcium is found in the bones and teeth. The other one percent is found in the blood, extracellular fluids, and within cells where it is a cofactor and activator for numerous enzymes.

Calcium in bones is in the form of hydroxyapatite salts composed of calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate in a classic crystal structure bound to a protein framework call "bone matrix." Put a chicken "drumstick" bone in a quart of vinegar for two weeks and the calcium will be leached out of the bone leaving the protein matrix. Similar types of hydroxyapatite are found in the enamel and dentine of teeth, however, little is available from teeth to contribute to rapidly available Ca to maintain blood levels.

In addition to being a major structural mineral, Ca is also required for the release of energy from ATP for muscular contraction, and blood clotting. In the blood clotting process ionized Ca stimulates the release of thromboplastin from the platelets and converts prothrombin to thrombin.Thromblin helps to convert fibrinogen to fibrin, and fibrin is the protein web that traps red blood cells to make blood clots. Calcium mediates the transport function of cell and organelle membranes. Ca effects the release of neurotransmitters at synaptic junctions. It also mediates the synthesis, secretion, and metabolic effects of hormones and enzymes. Ca helps to regulate the heart beat, muscle tone, and muscle receptivity to nerve stimulation.

Calcium is mainly absorbed in the duodenum, where the environment is still acid. Once the food in the intestine becomes alkaline, absorption drops. Calcium is absorbed from the small intestine by active cellular transport and by simple diffusion. Metallic calcium absorption may be limited to 10 percent or less and is affected by many substances in the gut. Calcium is highly absorbable, up to 98 percent in the organically bound plant derived colloidal mineral and water soluble chelated form.

Cause of calcium deficiency include a lack of vitamin D. So does a deficiency of stomach acid. Often the lack of stomach acid or hypochlorhydria results from a restricted NaCl (salt) intake. Lactose intolerance, celiac disease, higher fat diet, and low protein intake and high phytate consumption can lead to calcium deficiency. Phytic acid is a phosphorous containing acid compound found in the bran of grains and seeds as well as the stems of many plants. Oatmeal and whole wheat especially contain phytic acid. When phytic acid combines with calcium it forms an insoluble product called calcium phytate which cannot be absorbed by the body. Oxalic acid in rhubarb, spinich, chard, and mustard greens combines with Ca to form an insoluble calcium oxalate, which is not absorbed. Fiber itself, besides the phytate content, prevents calcium absorption. Alkaline intestine, gut hypermobility (too rapid transit time brought on by too much fiber fruit, etc.), and pharmaceuticals (antiseizure drugs, diuretics, etc.) result in decreased absorption and retention. Excesses of sugar and caffiene from coffee, tea, colas, etc. will leach calcium from the bones.

Patathormone secreted by the patathyroid gland and calcitonin secreted by the thyroid gland maintain a serum calcium of 8.5 to 10.5 mg percent for drawing on calcium reserves from the bones. The parathormone can also effect the kidney so that it retains more calcium. The same hormone can also affect the kidney so that it retains more calcium. The same hormone can cause the gut to be more efficient in absorption. When the blood calcium begins to rise from too much parathyroid activity, calcitonin reduces availability of calcium from the bones.

In 1980, McCarron et al theorized that chronic calcium deficiency probably led to hypertension. More than 30 subsequent studies supported the original theory of calcium deficiency as the cause of hypertension. In addition, recent studies have shown that serum ionized calcium is consistently lower in humans with untreated hypertension. In a recent review article, Sower and others noted that the association of calcium intake and high blood pressure is most clear in people with daily calcium intakes of less than 500 mg a day.

The phenomenon of salt sensitive hypertension consists of a rise in blood pressure and sustained increase in urinary loss of calcium in response to salt consumption. Among black and elderly whites with essential hypertension, restricted intakes of calcium and potassium, rather than elevated salt consumption is responsible for salt sensitivity. In a four-year study of 58,218 nurses, hypertension was more likely to develop in females who took in less than 800 mg of Ca per day.

Up to 75 percent of consumed calcium is lost in the feces. Two percent is lost in the urine and sweat (15 mg per day is lost in normal sweating-this can double or triple in active athletes or individuals engaged in physical labor). In cases of excess urine loss of calcium (osteoporosis, excess phosphorous, etc.), kidney stones, bone spurs, and calcium deposits will develop. Bone and heel spurs and calcium deposits always develop at the sites of insertions of tendons and ligaments during a raging osteoporosis. Bone spurs, heel spurs, and calcium deposits can be reversed and eliminated by supplementing with significant amounts of chelated and colloidal calcium sources.

Not only are our soils and food deficient in calcium,  additionally the American diet is rich in phosphorous, which is found in just about everything we eat. Ideally, the calcium to phosphorous (or Ca:P) ratio in our daily diet should be 2:1. This ideal ratio is not by simply eating food. You would have to eat 25 pounds of broccoli every time you ate a 16 oz. steak! The only possible way to approach the 2:1 ideal is to avoid as much as possible the food items containing high amounts of phosphorous (I hate calling colas, processed "cheese," etc, food) and supplement with plant derived colloidal and chelated calcium.

Abrasions

(scrapes): clean wounds with soap and water to remove gross dirt and debris. Disinfect wounds with H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide). Wounds may be bathed in a variety of herbal washes or poultice. Our choice is aloe, plantain (Plantago major), or comfrey (Symphytum officinale). Colloidal silver is useful here. Take Vitamin C orally to bowel tolerance (anywhere from 1-5 grams). Covering abrasions with nonstick dressings will help prevent infection.

Bi-polar Disorder

Bipolar disorder (mania/manic depression) is one of those descriptive diagnosis that “orthodox” psychiatry issues. We would estimate that as many as 90 percent of the non-drug dependent patients are totally “curable” at home with home testing and home remedies. Food allergies, sugar sensitivities, environmental sensitivities, hypoglycemia, and hyperglycemia are the major considerations.

Testing for allergies can be accomplished using the pulse test and/or the diet diary and rotation elimination diet. Environmental sensitivities can be identified by the pulse test and avoidance/challenge test. Hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia require six-hour CGT. Be sure to record the emotions and behavior of the patient during the entire six hours – the numbers alone are not revealing in and of themselves.

Foods that are common offenders are cow’s milk, corn wheat, soy, rye, and sugar. Environmental culprits include house dust, perfume, formaldehyde, and makeup. On the glucose tolerance test, the mania and/or depression may occur on the ascending or the descending arms of the curve so someone must stay with the patients and record emotions and events!!!

Treatment of bipolar disorder requires a considerable effort on the part of the “doctor” and “nurse” because a positive turn around may take some weeks with temporary relapses.

Treatment should include chromium and vanadium at 500 mcg q.i.d., autoimmune urine therapy for five to eight treatments, rotation or avoidance of offending foods, avoidance of sugar, caffeine, environmental allergens, essential fatty acids at 5 gm t.i.d., niacin (B3) 450 mg. q.i.d. in time release tablets, B1, B5, B6 each at 100 mg b.i.d. Plant derived colloidal minerals that contain lithium may be useful.

Osteoporosis

Is a decrease in bone that usually occurs in older individuals (more frequently in women). The big push by the "orthodox" doctors is for estrogen and fluoride supplementation, yet those two compounds alone do not solve the problem. In our personal experience osteoporosis is easy to prevent and cure with proper supplementation of stomach acid (HCl) and calcium. Do a pulse test to identify any food allergens that might be causing a celiac disease type change and malabsorption syndromes. The symptoms of osteoporosis are characterized by bone pain, joint pain, "dowagers" hump, and "spontaneous" fractures. Osteoporosis is the 12th most frequents cause of death in adults (following fractured hips, etc.).
